Tango Day, Gaucho Day and Immigrants' Day
We have designated a theme to each day of the congress. The tango represents Buenos Aires, the gaucho our country and the immigrant day evokes our origins and bond with all the races, creeds and cultures of the world.
Tango is a vibrant and playful dance. Bursting out of Buenos Aires and Uruguay in the late 1800s, Argentine Tango has evolved into a popular dance form that is now danced socially worldwide. It has very rich potential for expression, improvisation and connection and is danced in both modern and traditional styles. In 2009 UNESCO declared Argentine Tango to be a world heritage.
Gauchos are skilled horsemen, reputed to be brave and unruly. The gaucho is a national symbol in Argentina and Uruguay, but is also a strong culture in the far south region of Brazil. Gauchos became greatly admired and renowned in legends, folklore and literature and became an important part of our regional cultural tradition.
Immigrants. Migration towards the Argentine Republic in the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century can be characterized as overseas migration, with most migrants coming from Europe, leading Argentina to become the second most important country in receiving European immigrants after the United States.
